Sara Van Hoose, Ph.D.
ABOUT / DR. VAN HOOSE / CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
Care begins with understanding.
People are shaped by their histories, relationships, circumstances, and their ways of making sense of experience. I approach therapy with an interest in understanding how these come together in the life of a particular person.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist working with adults, couples, children, adolescents, and families. I also provide psychological and neuropsychological assessment.
My work is primarily psychodynamic and relational, informed by psychological research and other evidence-based approaches when useful. Therapy involves looking closely at patterns that may be difficult to see from within, and developing a fuller understanding of what is happening and why.
In addition to my private practice, I have taught and supervised doctoral psychology students at Yeshiva University and Long Island University.
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
I completed my doctorate in clinical psychology at Long Island University, Brooklyn, followed by postdoctoral training at the William Alanson White Institute. My clinical training included work in hospitals, schools, veterans’ settings, and community mental health, with a particular interest in psychological development, trauma, and the influence of early relationships.
At Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, I received specialized training in mother–infant mental health.
Before becoming a psychologist, I was a teacher. That experience continues to inform how I think about development and the different ways people understand themselves and the world around them.
